Volissos (former name Thucydides' Voliskos) is situated about 40 km away from Chios Town, it is the capital of the Municipality of Amani and the biggest village of the North-West area of the island, with a population of about 500 inhabitants. According to the tradition, Volissos is said to be the native city of Homer and some experts state that here the great poet wrote “Vatrachomiomachia”, a parody of Iliad.
In Volissos operates an
efficient small tourist industry offering everything you may need
during a vacation: restaurants, taverns, cafes, daily freshly-baked
bread from the traditional oven of the village, several shops,
hairdresser, good telecommunication, ATM for currency withdrawals, post
office, a Health Clinic, pharmacy, police department.
Beaches
A plain rich in olive trees and citrus trees separates the village from
the coast, which is only 2km far from the centre. There is a wide
selection of both sandy or pebble beaches; the most famous are Managros
(nearby there is also a summer camping site for Scouts), Magemena,
Gonia, Limnia (the port of Volissos, from which regular boats to the
island of Psara depart), Lefkathia, Limnos, Lampsa, Agia Markella. If
you rent a car or a motorbike, you can also reach many almost unknown
and uncrowded shores of outstanding beauty such as Tigani, Elinta and
Trachili beach.
Churches and religious celebrations
In the area surrounding the village you can also find wind mills,
remnants of some water mills and numerous Byzantine churches.
Local festivals takes
place on August 6th, celebration of the Transfiguration of Christ in
the main temple of the village, and 15th, celebration of Panagia –
Virgin Mary – in the homonym church; on these occasions tourists can
enjoy the musical and dancing tradition of the villages.
In the nature
The Volissos area is perfect for nature lovers who can collect herbs
and go hiking following a walking path starting from the village that
will give you the possibility of enjoying the rare flora, rich in
colours and aromas.
