Leptopoda is a pleasant village situated on a high rock between the mountains of Amani and Pelinneo, 60 km far from Chios Town. Today only about 30 people live in the village during the winter season, while in summer the population increases due to the arrival of villagers who spend holidays in their summer homes. The houses are built so close to each other, so that looking from outside you can see a continuous wall without interruptions.
This was in the past a protection system against invasions, moreover thanks to the side-by-side rooftops people could just ran on the roofs to escape into the forest by necessity or danger. In the entrance to the village you can find an elementary school, which is no longer used today, and the church consecrated to the Genisis tis Theotokou (Birth of the Virgin Mary), whose exact date of construction is not yet sure, but should date back before 1566. Enjoy a walk through the narrow streets and its arcades, which are decorated with beautiful arches. The local festival honoring the Birth of the Virgin Mary takes place on September 8th.
