Aphrodisia is situated 55km away from Chios Town and 13km from Volissos.
It is a pleasant village built in an amphitheatric design, located in a forest in the east side of Amani mountain, rich of spring waters, and from here one can enjoy an astonishing view of the Pelinneo mountain. The name of this village comes from the goddess Aphrodite: verbal traditions handed down generation by generation say that a Temple of Aphrodite should be buried below the current Teacher’s room, under the church of Saint Mamas.
Many small and big statues were found years ago in the village and the near forest, but unfortunately they were stolen.
For nature lovers, besides the forest in the outskirts, inside the village there is a wide range of tree types: olive, nut, almond, apple, pears and peaches trees. Moreover picturesque gardens with colorful flowers and perfumed smell of basil decorate the village’s streets. In Aphrodisia you can see the holy shrine of Saint Mamas, situated in the entrance to the village from Chalandra direction, the Old Fountain and the large cement table, the latter renowned in the village thanks to several festive parties and important community discussions that took place there, the Old School and the Holy Temple of Saint Mamas. This is one of the oldest temples of the island, it has been through numerous destructions and rebuilding processes through the centuries, last renovated in 1817 as stated by the carved stone found in front of the temple. Moreover worth seeing is the Monument of Heroes dedicated to the patriots died for the country.
The distinctive feature of Aphrodisia is the presence of a soccer field, the most important recent achievement since it is the only football field in the Municipality of Amani.
Concerning religious festivities, on September 2nd the celebration of Saint Mamas, the patron of the village, takes place on the village’s square, where lunch is offered and typical dances performed, while on September 14th there is the festival of the Rising of the Cross, which includes Divine Liturgy and lunch.
